Ummah Directory

Privacy

This page says what this site holds about you, why, and how to remove it. It covers ummah.directory only.

An entry we built from a public page

We build some entries from a public page: a professional's own site, or a professional directory.

Each of these entries says where it came from and links to that page.

It holds a name, a profession, a city and state, a practice name, a website and a short description. Some hold a photo from the same public page, with a credit to it.

An entry we build this way holds no phone number and no email address.

Credentials on an entry are self-reported. We do not check them.

A ready page

A ready page is an entry we build in advance for one professional and send to that person as a link.

Until its owner makes it public, a ready page is not in the directory, not in its counts and not in its sitemap.

Anyone who has the link can open the page. We do not store the link. We store a hash of it, which cannot be turned back into the link.

A photo on a ready page is kept outside our public file storage until the page is made public.

"Remove this page" deletes the page, its photo and its details from our live database at once. We keep one record: the hash of the link and the time of removal. That record holds no name.

Our backups are separate. Backup copies are deleted on a 31 day schedule.

The tick: "I am Muslim"

People use this directory to find a Muslim professional. We do not decide that from a name. Before a ready page becomes public, we ask its owner to tick "I am Muslim".

When you tick it and make the page public, we record the time and the exact words you were shown.

Your page does not show the tick, the words or the time.

We keep that record so we can show that you said it, and that we did not.

If you remove the page, that record is deleted with it.

Claiming a page

"Claim this page" on a ready page sends you to UmmahPass, our sign-in service, with a one-time ticket. The ticket lasts 60 minutes. We store a hash of the ticket, not the ticket.

UmmahPass asks for your name and your email. It sends you one email with a link and a code, to confirm the email is yours. It then makes an account. It records the internet address (IP) the request came from. Its form has its own "I am Muslim" tick, and it records that tick on your account with the time and the words.

When the ticket matches, this site records that account as the owner of the page. To do that, this site keeps your name and your email in its own database.

On an entry that is already public, the free claim works by email. You type your email, and a phone number if you choose. We email you a link. When you open it and confirm, we record the time, your internet address (IP) and your browser type. A person on our team checks a claim before the page changes, unless the link went to an email address already on the entry.

Messages to a professional

An entry that nobody has claimed has no message form. Its button opens the professional's own site.

A claimed page can have a "Contact" button. It opens a form at UmmahPass. The message goes to the email address on the professional's account. The form never shows that address.

UmmahPass does not store the message. The professional sees the reply address the sender typed.

What we measure

We count page views with Matomo, on our own server. We have turned its cookies off.

This site loads no advertising script and no advertising tracker.

The link to a ready page and the link in a claim email are kept out of our analytics and out of this site's web server log. Both record the word REDACTED in place of the link.

When you search, we store the search words, the profession, the number of results, and a hash of your internet address and of your session that changes every day. We delete these rows after 30 days. We do not store a search that looks like an email address or a phone number.

Like any web server, ours logs each request: the address asked for, the time, the internet address (IP) and the browser type. We keep these logs for 14 days.

This site sets two cookies. Both are needed for its forms to work. Neither is used for advertising.

Correct or remove an entry

On a ready page, "Remove this page" deletes it at once.

On an entry we built, "Ask us to remove it" sends us a request. We record the request and the internet address (IP) it came from. A person reviews it.
